Our History

Cable & Wireless has been helping people in the Caribbean communicate since the late 1800’s, when we were the first to offer international submarine cable connections, enabling telegraph communications between the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

With submarine cable and eventually radio telephone links, Cable & Wireless served as the primary provider of international communications links until the 1960’s and 70’s, and 80’s when in cooperation with Governments throughout the region, Cable & Wireless expanded its role to providing domestic telecommunications services on each of the islands where we operate today. The next two decades saw Cable & Wireless invest in telecommunications infrastructures that enabled rapid increase in the number of Caribbean people with access to a telephone.

Cable & Wireless followed the development of local fixed line telephony services with the launch of Mobile services in the 1980’s, and by offering Internet connectivity in the 1990’s. With subsequent launches of GSM networks and Content services for Mobile, High-Speed Broadband access, and NetSpeak, a Voice Over IP product, Cable & Wireless has ensured that customers in the Caribbean benefit from advances in technology at a global standard pace.

Through the early 2000’s Cable & Wireless, again in partnership with Governments throughout the region, relinquished its monopoly position in favor of supporting liberalization and more competitive telecommunications landscapes in each of our markets. To date, all markets have competition or are in the process of liberalizing… a process that has further developed telecommunications in the Caribbean, provided customers with more choices, and enabled Cable & Wireless to celebrate a new era of intense customer focus and success.
